Inglewood has the distinction of being Calgary's oldest neighbourhood and is situated immediately across the Elbow river from historic Fort Calgary. The community was established in 1875 after the fort was built. Ninth Avenue (formerly Atlantic Avenue) was probably the first "main street" in the city. The parameters run north to the Elbow river, south to 17th Ave, west to the Bow river and east to Deerfoot trail. Today, the neighbourhood is known for its new and old shops and arts district. It is also home to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, an urban wildlife refuge along with the Calgary Zoo.
